“I never knew there was more than one language!” A comment we’ve all heard and can keep educating people about, with the help of exhibitions such as this one at the State Library of Queensland.

Using colourful banners and audio equipment, visitors to Kuril Dhagun, the Indigenous Knowledge Centre in the SLQ can see landscape words in seven Queensland languages, while hearing their pronunciation at the same time.

People viewing the exhibition comment about the differences and some similarities between the languages, and have their curiosity stirred to ask more.

The display was put together with the input of Queensland language centres and the design work of Amanda Hayman and Joanne Driessens in the Indigenous Library Services unit at the State Library of Queensland.

The languages that can be heard are Butchulla, Girramay, Gudjal, Yugambeh, Nywaigi, Warrgamay, and Jirrbal.
